Thai plastic ban

Plastic bags have been in human life since the 1850s. This invention has brought many conveniences to people. However, with the increase in the use of plastic bags, people have found that plastic bags will cause serious pollution to the environment, so countries have issued plastic limit orders, hoping to reduce plastic bag use. Thailand also stopped the supply and use of plastic bags from January 1 this year.

The 75 member retailers of the Thai Retailers Association will stop using plastic bags from January 1 next year, hoping to reduce the use of 9 billion plastic bags per year or reduce plastic bag waste by 20%. Thais use plastic bags very widely, but big shopping malls such as Big C and shopping malls, supermarkets, convenience stores, etc. will stop using plastic bags next January.

The Thai Retailers Association believes that if 2020 ’s “give less, get less” campaign is seriously implemented in department stores, shopping malls, supermarkets, convenience stores and members of the Thai Retailers Association, it is expected that 9 billion plastic bags will be reduced, Reduce plastic bag waste by 20%. So if you travel to Thailand afterwards, you are advised to bring your own shopping bag.

In an interview with the media, Thai Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Valaou expressed the belief that after the implementation of this measure, Thai plastic waste will be reduced significantly, and the government also hopes to sprint the goal of "full Thai without plastic" by 2021. Despite plastic restrictions, plastic bags are still allowed in four types of products, namely foods that must be microwave-heated, wet foods (canned food, stickies, etc.), meat and fruits.

In addition to shopping malls and supermarkets, the “Catalogue of cosmetics banned from production, use and sale in 2019” published on the website of the Thai Gazette, has clearly stipulated that the use of plastic particles in cosmetics will be banned from January 1, 2020 At the same time production, imports and sales are prohibited.
