San Francisco International Airport is banning the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. The new rule comes into effect on 20 August, and is part of a five-year plan to lower landfill waste, net carbon emissions and net energy use to zero.
The change is a part of SFO’s five-year strategic plan. Launched in 2016, the plan includes SFO becoming a zero “waste-to-landfill” facility by 2021, asstated on its website.
According to SFO, each airport guest creates a half pound of trash. In an effort to reduce the waste, the airport is limiting single-use food accessories such as napkins, coffee cups and chopsticks. In addition to plastic, SFO is banning items with “unsubstantiated claims” about their sustainability. Now, water bottles with messages like “environmentally friendly” or “bio-based” will have to be approved by the Biodegradable Plastics Institute (BPI) before they are sold.
Although public reaction has mostly been positive, the news has resulted in some disgruntled business travelers who bristle at the inconvenience of having one more item to pack, while proponents of the ban think it doesn’t go far enough. Sodas, juices and flavored water can still be sold in plastic bottles.
More and more cities or countries will issue plastic bans, in order to protect the environment, everyone should make a contribution to the protection of the environment. For the convenience of drinking water and reducing the use of plastics, water bottles have become a necessity.
There are so many benefits that come from carrying a reusable bottle on a daily basis, as well as when traveling, playing sports, going to the gym, and when camping or hiking. With a reusable water bottle at your side, you can refill your bottle wherever you go with fresh water or your liquid of choice. Not to mention, you can significantly help reduce the amount of plastic bottles ending up in landfills and in the ocean, take more control over the quality of your drinking water, and have the ability to take warm or cold beverages along for the day.
Glass is largely considered the healthiest material for storing beverages. Glass is made from 100% natural raw materials, and is non-permeable, meaning that it does not break down into the water or impart flavors (some call this "purity of taste") or retain odors. Glass is the most environmentally-friendly material for water storage due to its natural production and its ability to be infinitely recycled. Glass is safe for storing hot or cold beverages, acidic or alkaline beverages, and oils. This is the reason that glass is used for bottling beer, wine, spirits, and quality olive oil and vinegar.
Plastic has caused a lot of pollution to the land and the sea. It is hoped that by banning plastic, we can be aware of the harm of plastic and reduce the use of plastic.
